  1. Default La Crosse, WI road trip west (help)

    Hi there,

So for graduation two friends and I want to go on a road trip as the last thing we will do together for quite some time. We'd be leaving from La Crosse, WI and going west. We'd like to hit, a couple decent sized cities, maybe in California, but also want to see small town America as well. Any National Parks would also be a top priority. We just need a little help getting going with getting all this figured out. We would like to be gone maybe 8 or 9 days. We all have alot going on this summer, with Missions to Peru, Haiti, Guatemala and Columbia so were fitting this in to see our own country.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much and Happy New Year!

    Default An Outline

Ave! Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Your first choice will have to be between seeing a lot of a few places and seeing less of a number of places. Somewhere in the middle is this tentative trip. Head west along I-94 through North Dakota with a first stop at Theodore Roosevelt National Park before continuing on to Billings and using the Beartooth Highway (US-212) into Yellowstone. From there, continue south through the Grand Tetons and turn southeast on US-287 to Rocky Mountain National Park. Finally, head home along the Platte River, US-30 and the old Oregon Trail - :Lincoln Highway. As I say, you can expand or contract that basic outline as it suits you, but such a trip would let you spend up to a day at each of a few great national parks while seeing some wonderful country in between.

    Default good ideas

I think Buck has given you a few solid ideas, and his suggestions are pretty close to a couple similar loops I've done in past trips.

With just a little less time than you've got, in the past I've done a loop from LaCrosse, up through Teddy Roosevelt, into Montana, and then back through places like the Devils Tower, Black Hills/Mt. Rushmore, and the Badlands.

I've also done a separate trip to Colorado, hitting Rocky Mountain and a few other parks in the state, then coming back through New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and North.

I will say that I don't see California as a realistic possibility, because its just too far to really do unless you've got closer to 2 weeks. However, there are a ton of places in the mountain west that could make for a great trip with the time you've got available.
