  1. Default Started planning Los Angeles to Grand Canyon

    Hello,

Finally the dream has a date! In september my girlfriend and me will explore the westcoast during a 15day roadtrip. I've started looking and think the westcoast is perfect for us. We want it all.. Beautiful beaches, big cities & stunning nature. So far I've come up with this:

    - Starting from Los Angeles airport
    - Up to San Francisco
    - Yosemite national park.. Probably the highlight of the trip, seems beautiful
    - And ofcourse Las Vegas :) It surprised me how cheap hotels are there.. About 20% of the prices asked for similar hotels in Belgium.. We plan to stay in Vegas for a few days and hope to come out rich ;)
    - Then we go to the grand canyon to finish the trip and head back to Los Angeles and see some things along the route which I have no idea about..

I'm not American and don't know about all the must see & do things along the route.. I've based this trip on Trekamerica's Westerner 2 which we were first planning to join. That's why I'm asking for some suggestions from you. The goal of this trip is not to rush trough these cities & parks.. We prefer putting less things on the agenda so we can enjoy them better.

Also we're looking to rent a car. Any recommendation about a reliable & cheap company that doesn't charge hundreds of dollars extra because of me being 22.

And another age issue.. My girlfriend will be one month away from becoming 21 in september and we read that nightclubs & casino's wont allow her because of the drinking policy. She never drinks though.. So I tought there might be some exceptions out there and hope it's not only shaggy nightclubs & casino's :)

Thanks in advance.. Feel free to edit and comment this trip.. It's very appreciated!

I have to ask - how does Florida fit in here? That's almost 3000 miles from LA!

There pretty much is no way to avoid the under 25 surcharge for a rental car, and being under 21, your GF won't even be allowed to drive it. There will be no exceptions to the under 21 policy in any nightclubs or casinos, sorry. Can you put the trip off till next year? Her enjoyment of Las Vegas will be considerably limited being underage. She will be able to go into restaurants but that's about it.

So there's security staff at all entrances of casinos & nightclubs who check ID's? We'll see when we get there. If it seems unpossible we move on and see some extra stuff.. I'll make a backup plan :) Thanks for the info

    Default don't bother

Yes, pretty much all bars and casinos can and will check IDs, and such places take a very very dim outlook on people who try to break those laws. Casinos and nightclubs can face harsh penalties from the state if they allow people under 21 to take part in drinking or gambling, so they don't fool around.

If you are caught trying to enter the Casino under age 21, in the best case, you will be escorted off the property. If you do manage to get in some gambling before you are caught, they can confiscate any winnings or chips, and in the worst case, they will make a call to the local police department.

Its really not worth trying. If this is something that is really a priority for you, I'd reschedule the trip until after she turns 21. I think you'll find Las Vegas to be an extremely frustrating experience if you don't.

I wasn't intending to let her gamble.. Just join me. She won't drink either. I was hoping there were clubs & casino's that marked underage people so they can't gamble or drink at all... I'll just make it a one night stay and maybe consider skipping Las Vegas..
And about the drinking.. Does this mean teenagers can't party before 21? Seems hard to grow up in the states :)

About the ittenary.. I found a really nice one on this forum of ppl with the exact same interest. I'll check some more and try to make mine as complete as possible before asking advice about it.

Thanks once again for the quick responses! I'll post a detailed planning this week.

    Default doesn't matter

If she is 20 years old she is not allowed on the casino floor, and both of you could be escorted out of she is there with you. It really doesn't matter if she is actively gambling or not.

You could spend a day just looking around Vegas and be fine, just looking around at the strip can hold its own attraction, but I wouldn't plan on spend much more than a day there with your current age situation.

They can legally party as long as there is no alcohol on the premises. Underage drinking is dealt with rather harshly in most US jurisdictions - including stiff fines, possible jail time, and loss of driver's license.

    Default Back to your trip.

I am sure you will find plenty of other things to keep you occupied in the West, and as said, a walk down the strip is quite some experience in itself with plenty of bright lights and "street" shows going on. From the Bellagio dancing water fountains to erupting Volcano's and pirate ship battles, it's all very entertaining.
With regards to the rest of your trip you will find a lot of info by searching the forums and road trip planning pages. To get you started here are some of our favorite threads and if you stayed in Vegas for a couple of days or so there are some great day trips to consider. You are correct, Yosemite is an amazing place and you could also consider going into Utah, North of Vegas where there are another two amazing National parks, Zion and Bryce canyon which you could include the North rim of the Grand canyon and/or go through Page by Lake Powell to the South rim.

Considering the age issue, it may be best to plan on a short stay in Vegas and spend your time seeing more "natural" wonders than big city lights. LA to SF up the coast road, Yosemite, Death Valley, southern Utah, and the Grand Canyon will keep your plate quite full.
