  1. Default Iowa - MN road trip suggestions

We (myself, 5yr old daughter, wife) are planning a summer road trip. (mid june) we will start in Waterloo Iowa and we would know we are going to end up visiting family in Chisolm, MN (near Duluth). I was wondering what would be a good week long trip.

We are trying to decide of going to Chicago-Wisconsin Dells-Northern MN. Or perhaps a loop around lake michigan and over. We even have thought about Canada trip... but we know virtually nothing about Canada. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Wisconsin Dells is the quintessential "Tacky Tourist Trap" if that is what you are looking for.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

I wouldn't recommend a Lake Michigan loop, simply because I think you'd be really rushed having only a week available.

Certainly the Dells will be a nice place for the kids to have some fun, with waterparks and other fun spots. There is actually a lot of natural beauty in the area too if you can make time.

You might consider following the Great River Road and visit a number of towns along the Mississippi River, perhaps you'd could even follow it all the way to the River's source at Lake Itasca State Park.

If you like the idea of Canada, you could do a lot worse than following the North Shore of Lake Superior and drive from Duluth to Thunder Bay. Just remember you'll need passports to cross the border starting in June.

    Default Dells

I worked in the Wisconsin Dells/ Lake Delton area for quite a few summers working at various resorts and golf courses. There are plenty of activities like water parks, magic shows, and an abundance of mini-golf and go-carts.There is also some pretty nice dining look into Fields Restaurant at the Wilderness, and great golfing look into Christmas Mt. Village Resort for a pretty decent 18 -27 holes. Ho-Chunk Casino is just down the highway in Baraboo, WI where they offer some of the regions only Off Track Betting. Mirror Lake State Park has some great kayaking, and Devils Lake State Park which has some nice bike trails and scenery are both in the area and were talking less than 10-15 minutes for all of these different things to do. The Lake Delton Dam did burst around a year ago so might want to look into that as many resorts and water activities do depend on it.

    Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

We actually would have more than one week, so how long would you recommend a loop around lake michigan take? We could start at Duluth or start the other way and end up at Duluth? Any one here ever done it? Thanks.
