  1. Default Buy or rent - car advice

    Hi Guys,

    My name is Warren,

Myself and my partner want to drive across the country around july Aug and have two exciting months to do it in. we're thinking of flying into NY then travelling to the southern states then across to Los Angeles.

For 2 months would it be easier/cheaper to buy a car to do the job or should we hire?

We would appreciate any advice or suggestions. thanks

    Default Not Worth Buying

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

That particular question comes up quite frequently, and the general advice is that unless you're planning on traveling for three months or more, it doesn't make financial sense to buy and then try to resell. If you are a foreigner with no permanent address in the state where you're trying to buy the car, the legal hassles are substantial. Add to that the fact that you want to buy a car in one state and sell it in the state with the most restrictive emissions laws, and you may have a very serious problem unloading it at the end of your trip. Rent.

Bottom line, it's very difficult, if even possible, for a visitor on a standard tourist visa to purchase and title/register a car and obtain insurance in any state since 9/11. It's also quite difficult to resell a car due to the current economic conditions. If you were here on some kind of extended visa and had a legal address here, then it's not that difficult.

  4. Default To NYC to Niagra

Hi there, Warren here, i've got two weeks to spend travelling to Niagra Falls from NY and back in early July. i've got my 12yo daughter coming with me and we've both never been to America before. Anyone out there go some sound advice? Ohh, We'll be renting a car and staying in motels, what kind of daily budget do you think would be resonable?

    Default tip of the iceburg

Its always hard to answer questions when we're given a two line post of questions with almost no background information.

You can go from NYC to Niagara in as little as a day, so your options for 2 weeks are very wide open, depending upon what it is that you are interested in doing. Since this sounds like it will be part of a larger 2 month trip, it also will depend upon what you are doing with the rest of your time.

Budget is much the same, there are too many variables to give you a helpful answer. It depends upon what levels of motels you will be looking for, how you plan to eat, if you plan to travel on a straight line between those two point, or detour throughout the east coast along the way, etc.

A *very* rough rule of thumb is $100 per day per person.
