  1. Default April Trip-Route Suggestion Please

    Hello,

Our family (2 adults, 2 boys at age of 10 and 4 respectively) is planning visit San Franciso from Toronto,Canada by air before end of April. It's our first time to SF, we prefer rent a car and go sightseeing, interest places are San Francisco ,Yosemite, Big Fur, Kings Canyon. Will have 9-10 days. Have done a little bit research, Yosemite will be partly closed in Spring. Wondering if we would have enough time to go to Big Sur and Kings Canyon. Also, which is the best route? some people said April would be a little bit traffic Jam on the road, is it true? We don't want to be rush, so how many days shall we spend on each place? If we don't have time go to Kings Canyon or Big Sur, it's OK. Anyone can help? Really appreciated your time.

Did you end up doing either the 2006 or 2008 trips to Las Vegas?
Yosemite will be partly closed in Spring.
GO TO YOSEMITE! Yosemite Valley is magical in the spring -- the Dogwoods will be blooming, the waterfalls will be flowing -- it's hard to beat the experience. Given the choice, I would choose Yosemite over your other places. But you can still make a circular trip and do both Yosemite, Kings Canyon and the Big Sur.

"Spring Break" is a floating holiday in the states -- and for some folks it starts this weekend -- I wouldn't worry about any extra traffic in April.

    Default Kings canyon ?

    Hi,

I agree with Mark, Yosemite valley is incredible, however you will have to keep an eye on the road conditions on 180 into Kings canyon and Cedar Grove as it usually opens around mid April and facilities at the beginning of May. However you could always take the Generals Highway to Sequoia NP and the Giants forest village for the largest of the trees, which also happen to be the largest living things on the planet.

    Hi Mark/Southwest,

    Thanks for your quick answers.
Our April trip to San Francsico and Yosemite is our first time there, as your suggestions, we will go only to SF and Yosemite, we only have 9-10 days including return flights time, so how many days is good for SF and Yosemite seperately? Also, as travelling with kids, we won't go for many adventage hiking, so will 3 nights in Yosemit be enough.
Another quesiton is shall we rent a car in SF, we are interested in sightseeing,is it more convenient to take public transportation?
    THanks again for any inputs.

PS, This forum is really great. Yes, we had end up our trip to Vegas 2006 and 2008, very appreciated to Mark and other members' advices/suggestions.

Public transportation in the city of SF is adequate, but you will need a car to see anything outside of the area.

  6. Default transportation in SF

Don't rent a car , parking is very diffficult. Check into the several transportation passes offered, they can be purchased at the underground visitor's center in Union Square. Our week long pass covered cable cars, buses and trolleys and allowed us to reach every tourist highlight. They run frequently until late at night and nobody has to worry about driving.

    Default Agreed.

SF is a compact city and is easy to get around via public transport and on foot and it's possible to get tours for such things as the Golden gate bridge and recreation area, although you could hire the car a day early or on your return to SF to enjoy surrounding locations. One tour I would recommend is Alcatraz and it's worth booking in advance. Other "hotspots" include Union square, the colourful China town, Coit tower and the lively Pier '39 where your young one will enjoy a ride on the Carousel.

Three nights and 2 full days at Yosemite will give you a nice amount of time to relax and enjoy the Valley and you could also head for Mariposa grove near the Southern entrance to Yosemite.
