  1. Default San Fran and Vegas-Car parking at Hotels

I am planning a trip through California in July and am a little confused about car parking at hotels. From what I can see most of the parking is not free. In San Fran they seem to charge around $50 a day parking in the city hotels. Also I cannot find if we could park a car for free in Vegas. Where in these cities could we stay without paying massive parking fee's ? I don't mind so much paying a small fee for parking but for the time we will be there $50 a day mounts up quickly.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

In San Francisco, you're going to have to plan to pay to park. If you are staying in the city, expect it to be a significant expense. I don't really know of much of a way to get around it. I've even had to negotiate to avoid paying parking fees at a hotel out by the San Francisco airport.

I've never paid to park anywhere in Vegas, though. Every hotel I've ever stayed at there has had its own parking ramp that is free both to guests of the hotel and the casino. I always figure that the casinos are going to make it as easy as they can to visit their establishment, so their not going to charge you for something like parking that might cause you to go somewhere else.

    Default San Fran

On Lombard street in San Fran there are some hotels with free parking and although not in the centre it's easy to get transport nearby and is close to the Mariner and not to far to walk to the piers.
We stayed at the Buena motor vista Inn that had free underground parking. It was clean but fairly basic but was some time ago, so it's not a recommendation as such, but you might want to check out whats available in that area.

Parking is usually free in Las Vegas.

I'm not sure about San Fran -- I've only been there once, and the company was paying! We had time to bum around a bit, and we had a great time, but I have no memory of parking. I'm pretty sure we did not pay at our hotel, but it was outside the city. I really do hate to pay at a hotel where I am a guest.

I do know one way to avoid paying to park. You need your oil changed, right? Doesn't everyone always need an oil change? Drop your car off late in the day, so it stays overnight for free and they do the oil change the next morning. Then call and say you'll be delayed. They're not going to get rid of your car.

Honest? Not exactly. Dishonest? Not really -- you're going to pay for the oil change, and they do hold cars for customers without extra fees. It's one of those grey areas.

And, of course, this assumes that you will not need the car for around-town transportation.
