  1. Default Winter Trip - Chicago to Los Angeles

Hi everyone, I wanted to get some information on driving from Chicago to LA during the winter. We want to avoid going through the mountains of Denver and then Utah and would much rather tend to stay south. Any suggested routes and/or feedback would be very much appreciated. Thanks, hope to hear from you all soon.

Take I-55/I-44/I-40/I-15. Going any farther south will add too many miles to your trip.

While I agree with glc's suggested route, you must remember that most of I-40 across northern New Mexico and Arizona is above 4000 feet, often above 5000. It, too is subject to winter storms and you will still need to exercise due diligence and keep an eye on the weather ahead of you.

    Default Route 66

Sounds like a good Route 66 trip, which runs alongside or under these interstates. Get off and check out a slice of Americana.
