  1. Default Road trip East Coast start and end in NY

Planning a road trip on the east coast with starting and ending point in NY.
Thinking of driving all the way down to New Orleans.
Any good suggestions for great experiences on the way (nature, local people etc - not so interested in history and larger cities).

Default Two Roads Too Good To Miss

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

For Scenery and access to nature and smaller towns on the way down, there are two roads that you should really plan on using. Starting just southwest of Washington and running down to the western tip of North Carolina is the Blue Ridge Parkway which is generally open its full length by early April, I-40 or US-441 offer good routes across the mountains to Knoxville and then on to Nashville. At Nashville the Natchez Trace Parkway starts and runs down to Natchez, MS. From there, US-61 will take you south to New Orleans, but consider a short detour east on I-12 to take the Lake Pontchartrain Bridge into the City.

    Default The coastal road

In 2007 I drove from Atlantic City to Key West along the ocean road, including the Bay Bridge and Tunnel... and several ferries. Well worth it. Mostly very scenic not busy and nice and slow.

Only problem I had was wanting to stop every couple of miles. There was always something interesting.

And I was fortunate enough to be at Cape Canaveral for the launch of the shuttle.

Lifey who plans to do it again in 2009
