  1. Default Winter Roadtrip Idea:leaving from NYC

I will have about 10 days to spend on the road this winter (early Jan. 09). The plan right now is to drive south to enjoy the slightly warmer weather and see that part of the country.
The plan right now is to visit the Great Smokies, and then drive to southern cities like Nashville and Atlanta. Any advice regard potential routes, things to do/see and food/lodging?

    Default Slow Down, Fast Back

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

While Great Smoky Mountains National Park does not close in winter, many of its campgrounds and other facilities are closed due to snow and cold. The same is true of the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you're looking for some 'slightly warmer weather', then you're going to have to stick closer to the coast and/or to lower elevations. If you haven't been down the coast before, I'd suggest that, basically taking the Garden State Parkway to Cape May, the ferry over to Lewes, DE, down the Delmarva Peninsula checking out Assateague and Chincoteague Islands, across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and on to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA as a destination. The nice part about following the coast on the way down is that you can go as fast or as slow as you want or the weather dictates until you're just about out of time and then come inland a bit to I-95 and hurry home in a couple of days when you run out of time, patience or money.
