  1. Default South Dakota -the Black hills in January

Another winter road trip question! We would like to see Mt Rushmore, the Crazy Horse memorial, wounded knee and the mammoth site, but will be travelling in January. We will be flying in to either Rapid City or Deadwood, and we are flexible with number of days.

I 'd appreciate help on a possible itinerary that ties these together, along with advice on weather/driving conditions at this time. Your own must sees would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Default Treasure Trove

That area is chock full of great places, towns and scenic attractions. Perhaps reading the adventures of another RoadTripper in that area would be the best way to get some ideas. As far as weather goes, it is simply too far out to predict in this point, but if you're going to be there for any length of time, you should count on cold temperatures and at least some snow.

  3. Default South Dakota in January?

We're hoping to visit Mt Rushmore in January - driving from Rapid City or Deadwood - what will driving conditions be like? (Also, we hope to visit the Mammoth museum, and wounded Knee - any problems forseeable?)

    Default Only Roughly

It is far too early to predict the exact weather you would experience, but on average, you can expect temperatures with highs around freezing and lows around 10ºF. On the positive side, January is dry season in that part of the northern high plains, typically getting less than a few inches of snow for the entire month. But you must keep in mind that 'on average' and 'typically' are just that and your weather may vary significantly.
