Thread: DC to Vancouver

  1. Default DC to Vancouver

    Hi,

I'm becoming Canadian-- moving out to Vancouver from DC, and I'm planning to take 10 days to do the drive. I was thinking that would be good to do 5-6 hours of driving a day, which would still leave a little time to see some of the fun things along the way. Does that seem reasonable? I could probably extend the trip by a day or two if necessary...

I'm planning on taking the I-90 route across, decided mainly on my desire to visit the Spam Museum. Any other things I shouldn't miss along the way? I'm a big fan of kitsch, and it looks like there's tons in SD but not-so-much in MT and WA... any off-the-beaten path ideas???

    Thanks so much!!

    Default Sounds Ideal

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

A few off-the-wall sites on that route would include Cuyaqhoga Valley National Park outside Cleveland; Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore just east of Gary; the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, WI; the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD; and Point Roberts, WA among others. And yeah, 10 days of 5-6 hours a day should just about do it right. Just keep an eye on the map and the calendar.

    Default Teapot Dome Gas Station....

...in Zillah, WA. One of my favorite kitsch places. It was the longest continuously operating gas station in the US until it closed a couple years ago, but it's still there.

There's more stuff to enjoy. You might check out Roadside America for more ideas.

Thanks so much for the advice!

I have a couple more questions--

    1) We're considering detouring through Yellowstone, but we would only have one day to do so (on the way from Cody, WY up to Bozeman, MT, I think). It would add quite a few hours to the trip (otherwise we would just be on I-90), and it's not like we would have tons of time to get out and explore. Is it worth the extra hours? I'd love to see the scenery, but not if I'm just going to spend the whole time wishing I had more time there...

    2) I also can't decide if we should make hotel/camp reservations beforehand... I love the idea of being able to be spontaneous and stop where we want-- but I'm afraid of places running out of room. Is this likely? We'll be on the trip in late August. Any thoughts??

Thanks again!!! And happy Canada day!

    Default Do It

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!
If you're really going from Cody to Bozeman, then you might as well drive through the park. Going up to I-90 from Cody wouldn't save you that many miles (about 25), and for the few hours (2-3) that driving through the park would cost you in that case, it would be worth it. It will be crowded in August and traffic will be moving slowly through the park, but you should still be able to see Old Faithful and a few of the other hot springs, some wildlife, Yellowstone Lake and the forests and mountains in a day's drive. It might be one of your longer days, but it would also be one of your more memorable ones.

I would suspect that travel generally will be down this summer, so I don't think I'd worry about reservations unless you want to.
