Default NYC to MN with 4 kids! What's to See?

We have a wedding to go to in August. After speaking with other family members, we decided to make it this huge family road trip where we pick up more members on the way.
I'm leaving New York City with a hubby and 4 kids of various ages going to Detroit Lakes MN. So far I've just started my research, and was lucky enough to find all of you. We plan to make it a two week trip, with stops in Columbus Ohio and Chicago a definite.
I've made the run to Ohio before and know I want to spend some time in Pennsylvania. I haven't had the chance to experience it yet. With all this in mind, I still don't know where to go in PA, or how to fill the gaps between Ohio and Chicago, and Chicago and MN.
I want my kids to see some of those odd tourist spots with a few water parks on the side. They're big history and nature nuts, so I'm hoping to get a taste of it all.
Any suggestions to help enhance or little adventure would be much appreciated.

In Columbus, make sure you go to the Columbus Zoo and Zoombezi Bay water park. Great places!

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

There is of course history and outdoor activities pretty much everywhere you go, but along your particular route some of the places you should be looking at are Gettysburg (not too far a detour), Amish country in Ohio, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, the Field Museum in Chicago, Wisconsin Dells (tourist tacky, but the kids will love it), Circus World Museum in Baraboo, WI, and of course the Mall of America in Minneapolis.

My son really enjoyed the Mall of America in MN. We went there when he was 2 and 5 yrs old.

Part of my 2 month trip this summer is MN to Chi to Columbus to Buffalo to NYC. Actually going to Park Rapids- which I think is near your wedding.

Anyway, there are tons of Amusement Parks in PA.

We're probably going to hit the Columbus Zoo also.

Did you know that if you join certain Children's Museums (family membership) you can get free passes to museums across the US? Any place that is about 50 miles from your home. This might work for you guys. Depends on what your kids like.

My 8 year old is more into amusement parks, carnivals and pools/beaches then historical landmarks, etc.

    Good luck and have fun!
