  1. Default Route 66.. any advice?

    Hello All..

Me and a friend are in the process of planning a road trip, at the moment we are focusing on Route 66, as it looks like it will give us all the experiences we want out of the trip.. we have both been to US before where we worked in a summer camp in Connecticut, we both now want to see more of the US (scenary etc..) We have about a month from middle of August to middle of September. We have looked at some packaged deals, though are not sure whether this will restrict us??

So if anyone has any advice about routes, package deals vs DIY trips, car hire etc.. or any tips at all then we would really appreciate it!

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Personally, I don't like prepackaged trips and think they would be pretty restrictive especially for something like Route 66 - where finding the little offbeat, often missed things is half of the fun. But certainly, if you don't want to worry about anything, a prepackaged trip would take the potential bumps out of the picture.

We've got a number of route 66 resources on this website, including this field report, and an entire section on our planning pages.

I like the do it yourself trips as well, though there can be good arguments for having something pre-planned by an individual that is familiar with the ins and outs of traveling in various areas of the country. Then again, that's what this forum is for!

I would think the packages would be fairly restrictive in itineraries. After all, with a month for the trip, chances are at some point you will want to deviate from the plan and go exploring off the beaten path. If you had all of your lodging set up in advance, you wouldn't be able to go to far out of the way.

With Route 66 and a month, you can experience a good swath of the country on the trip.

Ok.. thanks for your advice, we are goning to look a bit more into the pre-packaged deal, but neither of us want to end up restricted, and like you say a month is a long time, and when we get more adventerous it would be a shame to be restricted by accomadation etc..

    thanks alot
