Default Chicago to San Francisco - small children & U-haul

The main question: should we take the 80 or the 50? We've heard that the 80 will be faster and less scenic, and that the 50 will be more scenic and possibly more challenging with a 17 ft U-Haul (and two little kids). Does anyone have experiences to share?

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

When you're driving a large, unfamiliar vehicle sticking with the Interstates is never a bad bet. You'll always be assured of having easy to drive roads and services along every so often.

I-80 would be the most direct route for this trip and takes you directly from Chicago to SF. US-50 is farther south, so you'd have to detour down to it at some point to connect. Where were you thinking of joining up with US-50 and how much time do you have for this trip?
