  1. Default North Carolina to Wyoming. . .suggestions?

We are leaving Eastern North Carolina early this week. Can anyone provided us with information on scenic/alternative routes, must see attractions, and detours? This is our first big road trip and we don't know what to do or where to stop. I was thinking about taking a detour to see Mount Rushmore. How many days would you recommend?(We were thinking 3 or 4) Thoughts? Suggestions?

Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! Your timetable is a little tricky -- since I don't know where you are starting from and where you are going, but by the most direct route it would be around 2000 miles. And if you drove 8 hours a day it would take you a little over four days. If you add in a detour to Mt. Rushmore -- you need to add in at least two days, so its tricky to give you much of an estimate. How many days do you have in total? Once we know that, we probably have some suggestions for you.

  3. Default

We are leaving from Wilson, NC and traveling to Jackson, Wy. Does this help any? Maybe we will skip Mount Rushmore but what are some good stops for the four nights it would require? We were hoping to spend 3 nights getting there and 4 travel days.

    Default One Option

As Mark pointed out, you're looking at over 2,000 miles (nearly 2,200 from Wilson to Jackson and nearly 2,400 if you add Mt. Rushmore). But if you're willing to forego the detour up to South Dakota, you can make this trip in 4 days of steady 550 miles/day drives. That would put your overnight stops around Lexington, Kansas City and Sidney, NE.

  5. Default If you end up at Mt. Rushmore...

Make sure to check out the Crazyhorse Memorial, it's about 16 miles away from Mount Rushmore and about ten thousand times more impressive. Definately worth the visit if you're going to be in the Mt. Rushmore area.

As for scenic drives, you can't really go wrong in Wyoming, one of the most beautiful states i've seen.
