  1. Default Las Vegas to the Canadian Rockies and Back!

Hi Everyone. We are Brits living over here for a while and have 3 weeks off in the summer so are planning a road trip to see lots of the Country. At the moment our tentative itinerary is this...any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated!

Day 1 - Vegas to Bishop (we don't need a stop in Death Valley)
Day 2 - Bishop to Klamath Falls
Day 3 - A day Exploring around Crater Lake
Day 4 - Klamath Falls to Portland
Day 5 - Portland to Spokane along Columbia River
Day 6 - Spokane to Banff
Day 7 - Banff to Jasper stopping at Lake Louise for Lunch
Day 8 - Jasper to Vancouver
    Day 9 - Vancouver area
    Day 10 - Vancouver area
Day 11 - Vancouver to Seattle
Day 12 - Seattle to Newport
Day 13 - Newport (possibly whale watching)
Day 14 - Newport to Eureka (or another scenic town on the coast)
Day 15 - Eureka to SF
    Day 16 - SF
    Day 17 - SF
    Day 18 - SF
Day 19 - SF to Santa Barbara via Carmel
Day 20 - Santa Barbara to LA, then back to Vegas!

    Are we mad?

Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! -- That is a bit of driving, but certainly doable.
Day 1 - Vegas to Bishop (we don't need a stop in Death Valley)
In this case, I would take this route, and this one, and stop off at the Bristle Cone Forest -- very, very cool!
Day 2 - Bishop to Klamath Falls
This is a serious hard driving day -- you need to allow about 10 hours in the saddle
Day 3 - A day Exploring around Crater Lake
Day 4 - Klamath Falls to Portland
Here are some tips from this area. And a list of routes and ideas for this section of the trip.
Day 5 - Portland to Spokane along Columbia River
Day 6 - Spokane to Banff
Day 7 - Banff to Jasper stopping at Lake Louise for Lunch
Another excellent field report by Larrison for this region.
Day 14 - Newport to Eureka (or another scenic town on the coast)
Hard to beat Mendocino for this.

All in all -- a great trip!

Thanks for your reply, Mendocino looks fantastic!

Is there anywhere a bit further North than Bishop to stay overnight so we don't have a 10 hour day to Klamath Falls? We wanted to stay in Crater Lake Park, but all the accommodation is booked up for the dates we are looking at in July.

We are traveling with our 12 year old son, and we would like to go whale watching, is Newport the best place for this?

  4. Default Whale Watching

You've got several options for whale watching on this trip, and for different types of whales too.

When you're in the pacific Northwest, you can go whale watching for Orcas. These are day trips available from Vancouver area and Bellingham Washington, which are towns you are listed as staying in, or along the way between the towns you list. There are several pods of Orcas in the area, but Orcas are uncommon elsewhere.

Gray Whales, and possibly other whales including Right, Humpback, Minke, and Blue whales can be seen along the Pacific coast south of the Northwest. I'm not sure when the annual migration of Gray whales is, but if you go when the migration is passing, there are very good odds of seeing a whale. I've seen or heard of whale watching from Newport, Eureka, Mendicino, SF, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Ventura/ Oxnard, LA/ Long Beach, Newport Beach, Dana Point and San Diego. And I'm sure there are lots of other places as well.
