  1. Default SF - Furnace Creek - LV in June

    Hi there,

We are travelling from San Francisco to Furnace Creek (in one day) and the next day from Furnace Creek to Las Vegas. Mid June. Would appreciate any recommendations/tips on the best route via Yosemite along the way to Furnace Creek and if there anyone thinks the route from SF to Furnace Creek woudl be unrealistic to drive in one day.

    Cheers!

    hi there,
i would say that if you were crossing bay bridge it would be best to head south to castro valley then west along hwy 580. continue west on hwy 205 near tracy and get on the 120 all the way through yosemite [tioga pass should now be open]. head south on hwy 395 to lone pine and then head south east on hwy136 which joins the 190 that takes you to furnace creek.
the drive will be around 9 hours and that won't give you time to take in any of the fantastic scenery along the way. unless you need to be in vegas very early the following morning i would consider stopping earlier the first day and enjoying the journey, rather than rushing through. have a good trip!

You can drive from San Francisco to Furnace Creek in a day (about 9-10 hours) but you can not go through Yosemite to do it. The only way to cover that distance that fast is to drive the central valley of California (Interstate 5 and cut east on CA-58 and then in the back way to Furnace Creek). If you really intend to drive through Yosemite National Park you need to be ready for a marathon day of driving -- at a minimum it will require 12-13 hours. (Speed limits in the park and the increased visitor activity will require travel speeds that average 35 mph for long stretches).

Thanks for your advice. I'm thinking now that it may be better to stop off perhaps in Yosemite for the night, then continue on to Vegas the next day (via death valley). Any suggestions on where to stay in Yosemite?

Curry Village (the tent city) is fun -- but finding accommodations in June is sometimes tricky -- Mariposa has several nice options and if you want a real treat -- consider the Yosemite Bug (the Bug has a range of options and has been a favorite of folks-in-the-know for many years.)
