  1. Default Travel trailer: sleep at truck stop, Wal Mart?

We'll be moving from Key West FL to Las Cruces NM with a Uhaul truck and a pickup with 29' travel trailer. Don't have the time or money to stop at a nice little park each night. Can we sleep anywhere, but too bad we won't have electric or air conditioning. Any tips? Thanks. Move will be last week of April.

    Default Private Property

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Remember if you are going to be parking at a private business, like a Wal-Mart or a Truck Stop, you need to get permission from the owner/manager. Some places will be fine with it, others may not, and some places have created ordiances that prohibit "camping" in parking lots.

Read our article on Boondocking for more information and ideas on this subject.

    Default Truck Stop Parking Etiquette

Michael's advice is "right-on" with respect to private property lots (like WalMarts, shopping center, etc.) and technically with respect to truck stops, but modern truck stops are actually seeking your business. Just about every major stop has a section designed to accommodate the parking requirements of private tow vehicles and travel trailers and other forms of RVs.

The big thing to avoid it to park in a space that a big rig would be able to use. You should choose parking areas that do not take the space designed for the larger rigs.

Many lots are now going the way of "reserved" spaces. The costs are only about $10.00 per night, but they ensure that you will have a space.

  4. Default Thanks for your help.

Mark, I had no idea that truck stops were onboard with vehicles other than trucks. Thanks. That helps alot.

Here is an article I wrote for MSNBC Travel that addresses some of the services you can find at a truck stop.
