    Default Car Hire / Flights

Hi there! I'm new to this whole forum thing, so not really sure how it works, but here goes...!

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip for a month or so down the West Coast from San Francisco to San Diago.

We looked in to buying a car, but think we would have trouble getting insurance and selling it.

So I think that hiring a car would be a better option, but we wouldn't have the same experience as if we were in a really cool old 'classic American car'. Does anyone know of any car hire companys in San Fransisco where you can hire 'old classics'?

If anyone could recommend places that we should see along our trip as well that would be great!

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Sarah

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knows of an airline that does open return tickets?

We are flying from the UK (London) to San Fransisco, we are not sure where we will end up (probably San Diago) or when we want to come back. So if we had flexibility with this that would make us feel much more relaxed on our trip!

    Thanks,

    Default challenges

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

There might be a company out there that would rent a "classic american car" but I couldn't find one with a quick web search, and if you think buying a car is expensive, I'm sure you wouldn't want to spend the kind of money it would take to rent a specialty car. Remember, a "classic" car is going to require a lot of money to maintain in a condition suitable for a rental car, so you'll pay a huge premium for that luxury.

As far as an open ended ticket, I don't think you'll find anyone who will allow it for an international trip. Generally speaking, when you enter the US you need to prove that you plan to leave the country, and this is usually done by a return ticket. If you didn't have a return ticket, Immigration would likely not allow you to enter the US in the first place. What you would probably be best off doing is finding a ticket with the lowest fee to change your ticket, and then move your return date as you see fit.

Default Things to see on your trip

You asked for tips from San Francisco to San Diego. There are numerous discussions here about that very popular area.

This San Francisco to San Diego discussion should be very helpful. Also this great post about the beaches along the coast that deserve special attention.

These should get you started. Take a look at them, poke around the discussions here for other ideas, and after you have gotten a draft of our plans started, come on back here and we'll gladly jump in and offer some suggestions to help you plan a terrific trip!

    Default Airlines

Just wondered if anyone could recommend any cheap airlines that fly across the US. We're looking to head from San Diago, or somewhere relatively near, to Houston.

    Thanks.

    Default shop around

There is no one airline that will always be cheaper than the others.

Typically prices between airlines will be similar for the same trip, but not always. The only way to know is to shop around, using one of the many internet search sites like expedia or orbitz. With the exeception of Southwest and JetBlue which maintain their fares exclusively on their own websites, looking at a wide range of sites should help you find the cheapest available flight for your particular trip.

Default 7 week road trip San Fran ending up in Miami. Tips?

Just booked our flights, to San Fransisco on May 5th. We are planning to drive down to San Diago. We are planning to fly back home from Miami. But what we do in the middle is still up in the air!

We may drive route 66, or might fly accross. I will keep you informed as our plans progress!

My first question is does anyone know where we can hire a Jeep Wrangler? (To pick up in San Fransisco). I have looked on all the obvious websites...Avis, Budget etc, but can't find that type of car.

    Thanks for your help,
    Sarah

Default Don't know if its possible

I'm not sure than anyone rents Jeeps for general travel in the US. There are specialty companies that rent Jeeps for Off-Road trips, but I don't know of anyone who would rent one for a regular point to point trip.

I will also say that even if you do find one, they aren't idea for traveling. I rented one for a trip in Mexico and Belize. That was nice because I was occationally traveling on 3rd world quality roads, but since there is no trunk and the cover is easily removed, there simply is no way to safely store any cargo/luggage inside the vehicle.

I think you might be stuck looking for an SUV or a Pickup if you want the higher seating position. Just remember, no regular rental agency will allow you to take any of their cars off road.

Default Well done - bet you can't wait!

You're unlikely to be able to rent anything other than a standard car on a long distance one way rental. The rental agencies (understandably) don't like their cars to be all out of place around the country (hence the high surcharges on one-way rentals) and simply do not rent the specialist cars (luxury, 4x4, etc) for this type of journey.

Can I ask; was there a particular reason that you wanted this kind of car? If it was for off roading (not that its a very good car for that anyway) then, as has been mentioned already, it'll more than likely break the terms of your rental agreement to take it off road anyway. Quite why they do actually rent 4x4s at all I have yet to fathom!

Default How to spread out our 7 week trip

We want to visit the following places during our 7 week:

San Francisco - LA - San Diego
    Grand Canyon
Drive to Chicago - any ideas how long (a rough idea) how long this would take from San Diago? We're not sure which route to take to Chicago - again any recommendations of places we should see along the way would be great, then we can research them.

We have friends in Chicago, so may take a week just relaxing there.

We then want to fly from Chicago to spend some time in the Florida Keys, chilling out and fishing etc. (which is th ebest airport to fly to?).

We want a final blow out in Miami, say for a weekend, hit some good clubs to finish with a bang!

The thing is, it is very hard to tell how long it takes to get between places, and how long things take to do etc.

We want to have a rough idea of how long to spend in each place so we can plan our trip more effectively.

If anyone could recommend which places are worth spending more or less time in, and say proprtionately how long we should spend in each place that would be a great help.

As I mentioned, we are looking to relax mainly in Chicago and The Keys, and the rest will just be soaking in the atomosphere of different places and moving on fairly quickly I think.

    Thanks,

    PS,
Still working on getting our Jeep Wrangler!!
