Default Road trip from GA across Southwest

As a family we are planning to fly into CA, rent a car and drive back to GA. Looking for suggestions of stopping places. We have 4 already but want to know other good places to see as a family. Places set in stone are Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, and Carlsbad Caverns.

    Default Welcome!

Welcome to the RoadTrip America Forum!

Those are all good places to stop - however, one thing we don't know is how much time you are allotting to this trip? Depending on the amount of time, this can really open (or close) opportunities for you.

We are looking at 6-10 days for this trip. Also, it will be either latter May or early June.

    Default A Few Others

Los Angeles to Atlanta, and hitting your 'etched in stone' destinations, is around 2500 miles, so 6 days would really be pushing if you plan to spend any time at your stops. But as you add more days you can also look at adding Petroglyph National Monument outside Albuquerque; White Sands National Monument OR Roswell, NM; Monahans Sandhills in west Texas; Dallas; maybe a short run on the Natchez Trace Parkway; and Vicksburg. That's certainly not an exhaustive list, but just a sampling of some of the more family-friendly sites along the way.

How many more days do you recommend?

Default That is Entirely up to You

The more days you add, the more things you can see and the longer you can spend at each one. What I'd do is immaterial. Figure that you can drive 500-550 miles a day comfortably. The mileage between points is relatively easy to determine with on-line mapping routines. Then you have to determine how many sights you want to see and how long you want to spend at each one. Sum up those times and add them to the time needed for the drive, and then you'll know how long your proposed itinerary will take.
