  1. Default SFO - San Luis Obispo - Vegas - Yosemite

I'm visiting the USA the USA from the UK in June with my wife and two sons.

I plan to do the coastal road from near Los Gatos down to San Luis Obispo (How do you pronounce that name?).

Next across to Vegas, which we'll use as a base to see the Canyon and Lake Mead.

Third a long day driving up to Yosemite, through Death Valley.

    Then back to SFO.

    Any particular suggestions as to

    a. Must see places
    b. tips to make the trip enjoyable

This will probably be our last family trip as the boys are getting grown up, so I'd like to make it special.

    Thanks in advance

    Default hard charging

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

San Luis Obispo = San Lewis Oh-Biz-Poe

Or at least that's how I most commonly here it called.

Otherwise, we've got a few hundred threads that already discuss this basic route in exceptional detail. You can find a few of our favorites here.

  3. Default How long do you have?

How long do you have to make this trip? At a minimum, I'd guess a week is needed to really do this loop (other than the driveby and look out the windows option...)

Given a time frame, we might be able to suggest somethings not quite on the beaten path to make this a bit more special.

    Thanks, guys.

    1. We're spending 2 days in Palo Alto.

    2. One day driving to St Luis Obispo and stay overnight at Madonna Inn

    3. One day driving to Vegas & stay there 3 days.

    4. One (long) day driving thru Death Valley to Yosemite and stay there 4 days.

    5. One day driving to San Francisco (maybe stopping at Napa en route) and 3 days in Frisco. We'll be there for 4th July :-)

    Default Vegas and the Canyon

Las Vegas doesn't really work well as a base for a daytrip to the Grand Canyon, its just too far to drive there and back in one day.

If you want to visit the Canyon, you really need to plan to spend at least one night in that area.

I'm going to splurge on a helicopter trip to the Canyon for the family and kids. Fly along and into the canyon, boat trip along the river, barbecue lunch on top.

Unless you tell me it's a bad idea...

    Default sounds great

If you've got the coin to splurge for that kind of trip, then by all means, go for it!

It won't be the same as looking at the canyon from the rim, or hiking down into it a little ways, but it will still be a great experience in its own right.

    Many thanks.

The helicopter trip of the Canyon will make my credit card squeak, but I am trying to squeeze in as much as I can in this holiday. (We'll do our main hiking in Yosemite.)

Those 6 ideas for daytrips look great!!!! I am going to email them to the family and we'll choose one or more. Thanks so much for your suggestions.

I've enjoyed every business trip (>20) and holiday (2) I've had in the USA but I want this to be the best.

    Any suggestions around Death Valley?
