Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

The basic advice for planning a long distance winter drive is to plan several different routes, check the weather forecast a day or two before you leave, and then an only then, pick the route you will take. In your case, I-90 is just one possibility. If snow or freezing rain is forecast in the northern Rockies, then you can start out by heading southeast to the Salt Lake City area on I-82/I-84 and then use I-80 to Chicago. If snow is forecast in the Great Lakes region, then you can use I-29 to head south to Kansas City and use I-70 into Baltimore. You can even drop as far south as Nashville and get to Baltimore via I-40/I-81/I-66/I-95. The longest of those routes is 'only' about 400 miles longer than the shortest, with most being just 100-200 miles longer. Still, the best rule of thumb, all other things being equal, is to take the shortest route (I-90/I-94/I-80/I-76/I-70) and minimize your time on the road. You'll find lots of other winter driving tips here.
