  1. Default San Fran to Atlanta ... Advice!

Two of us making this drive (in a car) during summer '08, over 30ish days. We obviously want to take in some of the major sights/experiences, but are just as interested in the quirky, off-beaten-track stuff that might not be featured in every guide book we've already bought. All suggestions definitely considered! Also, would anyone recommend booking any of our accommodation in advance (maybe Vegas?) or could we just plan each day/night as it happens. Cheers in advance from a very excited Brit!

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Well, with a month to do a week long trip, and a desire to find the off-the-beaten-track venue, my first advice to you would be to 'get lost'. Maybe even literally. Get yourselves a good atlas of U.S. road maps before you leave the San Francisco metro area and just wander at will down side roads to some of the smaller state parks, or national parks and monuments that you haven't heard of. For some ideas, and a ton of links that will lead to still other ideas, have a look through these state by state lists. Obviously, such a plan of operation precludes making advance reservations. but other than not saving yourselves the 10% or so off the price of a room that you could manage by pre-booking, there is almost no danger of finding 'No Vacancy' signs, except near major parks (Grand Canyon) or during major events. And since you'll be paying with sterling, I wouldn't sweat the 10% - the dollar will probably devalue that much in the next few months anyway. So, after you've had a look at the links above, and have a slightly more polished idea of your route, let us know what in particular appeals to you and we'll se if we can offer some more specific recommendations.

  3. Default San Fran to Atlanta

Cheers AZBuck. We love the A-Z list, thanks for that. Our planned route will be fairly fixed to begin with: San Fran, coastal Route 1, LA, Vegas, Grand Canyon. After that, things get a bit more unplanned. I40 would basically take us all the way to Nashville which is where we're heading, but we'd like to stray off that as much as possible. Hopefully, with the time we've got, we can get off the interstate enough to discover 'real' America. I am aware that old 66 would be an obvious choice, but any other suggestions greatly received.
