  1. Default Best route from Tracy Ca to Zion National Park

I am planning a trip to Zion this summer from Tracy, Ca towing a 27 ft travel trailer. I was hoping to get some recommendations as far as the best route to take. In addition to the route, any suggestions as far as RV friendly rest areas for overnight stays on the way would also be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Default best?

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

There is no such thing as a all-purpose "best" route between any two points. Each options will have its own pluses and minuses, so the Best route will depend upon what you are looking for.

If you want the fastest and easiest route, You'll want to take I-5 to near Bakersfield, CA-58 to Barstow, and the up I-15 through Vegas and into Utah. Its about 700 miles, and should take you about a day and a half to drive at a comfortable pace in an RV.

i agree with all the above, but another option which is slightly less in miles but longer in time and gets you of the main highways would be through yosemite and onto tonopah and then onto the e.t. highway from warm springs and head for st george, providing the tioga pass is open when you are planning to travel.
just before tonopah there is a lovely rest stop called millers rest.

Default Many states don't allow overnight camping at rest stops

So you will want to check that in the states you're traveling in

You can nap a little but not stay all night, usually.

    Default Red Rock State Park

    Hi,

If you go to Zion via Bakersfield, Mojave, Las Vegas, etc. (at least a couple of hours faster than through Yosemite), I highly recommend Red Rock State Park, just a few miles north of Mojave, CA, as a great place to camp. Yes, there is a fee, but it is reasonable and the geography there is very interesting.

Where is Millers Rest Stop? This could very well be a good option for us.

I thought of something else that you might be able to help me with. From Zion I would like to travel to Bryce. I am aware there are issues with driving from Zion through the Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel. Is there a decent alternate route or is getting an escort the best option?

it is situated just before tonopah on highway 6.from tioga pass the 120 goes to benton then head for tonopah.it shows on most maps and is well signed, heres a link to the stop.

we travelled through yosemite making stops along the tioga pass,a lovely drive and stayed here the night. the following day we made it to virgin on the doorstep of zion without having to push hard, but it's a long day. it's a straight forward drive across the desert, and we enjoyed the solitude and scenery.warm springs is a little ghost town[newish] on the way that has a hot spring that comes out the mountain and is diverted to a pool. it's fenced of,but there is a hole if you want to dip your toes, well worth a half hour stop to look around.we also stopped at the "littlealien inn" on the e.t. highway for lunch.[nevada 375 south from junction at warm springs]

    to answer your other question.
we were in a 30ft r.v and travelled from zion to bryce and the tunnel is not a problem, although you may have to wait a short while untill they stop the on coming traffic so you can enter, keeping to the middle. it's the best way between the 2 parks and a beautifull drive across checkaboard mesa and through red rock canyon,so give yourself a little more time for exploring.
