  1. Default AlCan from Anchorage

My girlfriend and I flew into Anchorage sometime back as Americorps members. We had assumed that when we were ready to leave, we'd fly out again, but now that we've accumulated stuff and a van, that's not much of an option.

Now the plan is to drive out next summer in our Econline. However, I'm uncomfortable driving along cliffs, and I understand that's pretty much a necessity to simply get out of Alaska by automobile. Can anyone give me an idea of the best, least terrifying roads, as well as the scare factor?

Well, one solution is to take the car ferry to BC or Seattle. Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum.

I can't really visualize where these cliffs could be -- perhaps in Canada, but not Alaska. There are mountain passes -- but not cliffs that come to mind.

really? It's possible the people I've been talking to are either exaggerating the drive or have just taken a different road. Which road do you usually use through the Alaskan/Canadian border?

    Default What options

Other than a couple small roads, there really is only one main road that takes you from Anchorage/Fairbanks onto Whitehorse and points south.

  5. Default Southern route or northern?

Hmm.. there is a route east from Anchorage which joins up with the Alcan at about Tok (the Tok Cutoff Highway, the A1). It's a bit shorter than the route north to Fairbanks and then down -- but I don't know anything about the topography of that route.
