  1. Default Trip around Grand Canyon

We are planning a trip to California next summer, but we also want to see both Las Vegas and Grand Canyon. Does anybody know how long it will take if we choose to drive around the Canyon? (if we drive north-east from Las Vegas to Page and then south-west from there and back to Las Vegas?)

Where are the most scenic routes? On the north or the south of the Canyon?

Thank you so much for your help!

    Default To Help You Choose...

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

The circle route you describe, from Las Vegas around the Grand Canyon and back to Las Vegas, is somewhere between 700 and 800 miles, so you're looking at 14-16 hours of driving time to make that circuit. You will also, of course, have to add in the time to drive from wherever you are in California back and forth to Las Vegas. Los Angeles to Las Vegas, for example, is 270 miles one way.

You really won't have many choices as far as routes go, but fortunately, the roads you'll be on are some of the most scenic in the world. As for which rim to see, the North Rim is a bit isolated, and there is only a single road (AZ-67) into it from US-89 at Jacob Lake. It is 50 miles from Jacob Lake to the rim, so that means an extra 100 miles in and out to get there. It also means once you get to the rim you will have only a limited number of viewpoints. The compensation is that the North Rim draws far fewer crowds and is a quieter experience. By contrast, you almost have to see the South Rim on your around-the-Canyon drive, on US-180/AZ-64 from Cameron to Williams. This road has the benefit that it follows the south rim of the Canyon for 20-25 miles affording multiple view points and trail access points. On the downside, you will be sharing the road and pull outs with lots of busses and other tourists.
