SF to Vegas and back: Off the beatan track?

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking to do a weeklong trip during late december from SF to Vegas and Back. I'm thinking of doing the touristy SF -> Big Sur -> Los Angeles -> Vegas on the way to vegas.

For the return journey, I'm looking to do something different. Maybe some quite countryside town on the central valley.. any recommendations?

Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! How long are you planning to stay in Las Vegas? San Francisco to Las Vegas via the Big Sur is a two day drive (at the minimum) What kinds of activities were you considering at that specificed "quiet countryside town in the central valley"?

One place I might suggest would be Tehachapi and then if you like trains, go down the road and see the famous "loop" -- longer trains cross themselves as they snake up the mountain.
