Christmastime is an excellent period to visit the southwest. Welcome to Great American RoadTrip Forum!

I am not sure what your plans are for this Day and 1/2 period, you have to remember that snowfall is possibility along most of the route -- we usually have some version of snowstorm in Las Vegas in late December (not by Detroit standards) but it will still affect your travel plans. If you are going to drive to the South Rim from Las Vegas in winter, you need to leave in the early morning, not in the afternoon. While it is true that from downtown Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon Village is only 280 miles, no one can cover this distance in less than five hours and you would be smart to allow six.

Only if you have a police escort... By the fastest possible route, it is 553 miles, but owing to the likely reduced speed of the roads -- again this winter travel -- you are unlikely to cover this distance faster than 10 hours. So, I agree you ought to break this into a couple of days travel.

I would spend as much time as you can at the Grand and then stay overnight in Kingman and then drive to San Diego.

Here are some suggestions for routes and places to see along the way.

    Great suggestions..Thanks......

Yeah i will take off in the morning from Vegas to GC considering the climate conditions...

I would assume that GC to Kingman is about 5 hrs drive...and the same from Kingman to San Diego..

Will look for right place to stay in Kingman...

    Default Yes and No

While using Las Vegas (again) as your stop off point between the Grand Canyon and San Diego is feasible - it only adds about 50 miles to the total drive - it does have its disadvantages. It would require returning over the Hoover Dam which is subject to occasional serious traffic jams due to heavy truck traffic, construction and security, and it would mean that you are bypassing the specific scenic alternatives that Mark suggested. I think you and your family would be more likely to enjoy the new sights of Oatman, Old Route 66, and the like. And I think that if you looked, you could also find some pretty good deals for a room in either Laughlin, Bullhead City or Lake Havasu.

    Thanks that clarified my doubt...

I see its a 3 hr drive from GC National park to Laughlin & another 5 hrs from there to San Diego..that would work well for us along with the baby..

which is the best route to take ?? i see US-89, I-15 Etc from GC and I-40 to San Diego..

Here is the plan after your advices

From: Grand Canyon National Park Highway 64 N Grand Canyon, AZ 86023 US
    To: Peach Springs, AZ US
To: Laughlin, NV US (**overnight stay**)

    Next day morning

To: Lake Havasu City, AZ US
    To: Parker, AZ US
To: San Diego Zoo 2920 Zoo Dr San Diego, CA 92101 US

    Default Why Laughlin?

Well, it is ~205 miles, but you won't get there in three hours. Four hours is about right -- but if you go to some of the places discussed above it would be about 6-7 hours. But, why are you planning to stay in Laughlin? Kingman is a nicer place.... Laughlin is OK too, or course.

Yes, it is about 345 miles and if you travel on the Interstate highways (the fastest route) you can probably make it in about six hours -- where are you getting those very optimistic travel time estimates?

The interstate route is fine -- but one of the most scenic sections of the Colorado River that you can see from the highway is along AZ-95 -- you can also drive over London Bridge if that appeals to you in Lake Havasu City. When you reach Parker you can turn west on CA-62 and drive through Joshua Tree NP and then down to I-15 (This route would take ~ 8 hours).

    Default Oatman vs Peach Springs

Route 66 through Peach Springs makes for an interesting drive, but if it were me, I would bypass route 66 (Stay on I-40) until you reach Kingman and then follow Route 66 over Sitgreaves Pass into Oatman. It is an old gold mining town (there is still an active mine there) and then turn north on AZ-95 and drive along the Colorado River to Bullhead City and Laughlin.

OK, it is clear that you don't believe me. So, I wish you the best of road tripping success and if you manage to drive from Laughlin to the San Diego Zoo in 6.5 hours via Parker, Arizona -- I will be truly amazed! What is realistic -- not that you will believe me is that this route will require every second of 8 hours....

If you want to make the San Diego Zoo from Laughlin the fastest possible way, you need to go US-95 to I-40 to I-15 which will be about six hours....
