  1. Default 10,000 Miles 45-90 Days

    I begin my road trip tomorrow, I am understandably (I hope) a little nervous. I like to think I have planned the best I can for an unplanned trip. My general outline is;

    Connecticut to Virginia Beach
    to Fort Bragg, NC
    to St Augustines
    to Florida Keys
    to New Orleans
up the Mississippi River to Chicago
    to Yellowstone
    to Glacier National Park
    to Portland
    to San Diego
    to Las Vegas
    to Tucson (My new home)

This is a fairly rough outline as I will be detouring and seeing a lot of additional places. I hope to take 3 months to do this but I will be alone and in a smaller car so I might get tired of driving and go a lot faster.

I will be posting updates here as well as listing pictures on my website which I will link when I get some content going.

I would love to do this part of the trip -- I have traveled parts of the journey, but never as one trip.

Look forward to your periodic reports!

I look forward to seeing your website and following your travels.

Ya know, as an alternative to rushing to your destination if you get tired of driving, why don't you just stop somewhere that you really enjoy for awhile. If you find a spot that is like a slice of heaven, stay for a week or so. That would give you time to shake off that road dust for awhile before moseying along again. You might get antsy, rush to your destination, and look back later and regret that you didn't linger and enjoy while you had the chance. Just a thought.

    Hello All,
I have been on the road for 6 days so far. All and all it has been pretty uneventful. I have made it as far as St Augustines and I am spending the night in a hostel there.

I think I will cut out the Florida Keys section of my trip but I will make the finial call on that tomorrow. I dont know if it is worth 3 days of driving to see them. So I am pretty sure I will cut over to New Orleans starting tomorrow then work my way up the Mississippi River. Staying off the interstate has been going pretty good. I have driven I-95 dozens of times in my life and I am seeing things I have never seen before. It is a lot slower but the sights are much better. I could of made the same trip here in 20 hours on the highway.

There are a couple of things my careful planning missed.

    1) Windex and paper towels, my windshield has become pretty bug ridden and it would be nice to clean it. I am having a hell of a time finding a gas station that has window cleaning supplies available for use.

    2) Wet naps. My hands have been getting pretty grimy after 12-14 hours of driving.

incase there is interest I am blogging the details of my trip at here.

I will update everyone when I get another decent internet connection. Speaking of that for $20 a night this hostel is a bargain with all you can eat pancakes, great staff that beat any hotel I have ever been in, and a location that cant be beat. I was slightly disappointed there were no other guest and I had to stay alone I was looking forward to the conversations.

    Default Missing Margaritaville?

Gosh, that's one of the places high on my list to drive to. Just going over those bridges that look like you're driving on the water....wow. But, hey, all places and roads are good. So you'll just have different adventures on your way west.

I doubt the windshield carnage will end, nor will the grimy hands, so you may as well stop and get those supplies. I'm kind of surprised. When I've driven through buggy areas, the gas stations have been more generous. Since this can be a safety issue if your windshield can't be seen out of, I think you should cover it yourself if they aren't.

I'm surprised you were a lone hosteler. Hopefully, you'll get some camraderie soon.

Good website. It seems to me that you've covered a lot of ground in 6 days. It won't take you 3 months to drive your route at the rate you're going if you keep up this pace. All the more reason to go to Key West, imho. Especially since you're moving west. You may not get the chance again.
