  1. Default Coast to Coast, rent or buy?!

    Hi

Me and a couple of friends (all from the UK) are looking at coming to the US and driving East to West over a couple of months.

The main question is whether to rent or buy our vehicle. We would hope to buy as this way we are not throwing our money away and could at least get some cash back for it at a dealer before we leave.

The problems with this I would imagine would be sorting out insurance and road tax etc. for such a short period of time and with neither of us having an address in the states or a US driving licence.

Does anyone know if this is possible to do, or if not how much it is likely to cost renting a car for a couple of months? Also is it possible to drop a car off on the other side of the country from what it is hired in?

    any help is much appreciated.

    thanks

Default Rule of thumb -- Break-even: 3 Mos

Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! There has been a good deal of discussion about renting vs. purchasing on this Forum. In my view, unless you are a skilled mechanic the price of the used car + the likely maintenance versus a rental vehicle doesn't approach break-even until you hit three months. But other views can be read here. For many international visitors the best option might well be purchasing from a broker who guarantees a re-purchase option. Here are some ideas about the "address" thing.

No problem with that -- it is done all of the time -- there will (likely) be a drop-off fee.

  3. Default Rental

    Hi thanks for the info.

Looks like renting is probably the better option, the cost will be split between 4 so shouldnt be too bad.

Do you know of any good/cheap rental companies that we could use? Most of the ones ive been looking at you can only rent for 28 days or less and/or need a US credit card which none of us have (have Visa/Mastercard, just not US) .

    thanks again
