  1. Default West coast to East coat (Los Angeles to New Haven)

I am planning a road trip with two others. We are leaving LA next Saturday, Aug 25th and planning to arrive in CT the following Friday, Aug 31st.

So far I have mapped out the following:
Leaving LA toward Utah on the 15
    Through Colorado on the 70
Then catching the 80 all the way through Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Penn, NY, and phew, CT.

I've driven cross country a few times, but never this way. We want to drive during the day, sleep at night, and try not to kill each other.

I was thinking of breaking the trip up like this:
Sat: LA, Ca to Green Richfield, UT 8 hours, 550 miles
Sun: Richfield, UT to Denver, CO 7 hours, 465 miles
Mon: Denver, Co to Omaha, NB 7.5 hours, 540 miles
Tues: Omaha, NB to Chicago, IL 7 hours, 470 miles
Wed: Chicago, IL to New Haven, CT 12.5 hours, 870 miles (still iffy on this bit)

So I seem to be stuck on the last leg. I have not driven around this part of the country very much (the Ill, Ind, Oh. area) and am curious about where to break up this last leg of the trip, if we should, or if we should leave it open in case we are all exhausted and decide to spend an extra night somewhere.

Anyone have any advice about my possible route?

    Thanks road trippers!!

First: It looks like you've got the trip pretty well worked out. Good for you for not planning 10 or 12 hour days. You can just cruise, enjoy some scenic stops, relaxed meals (get away from the highway to find the better local restaurants), and get a decent night's sleep on each leg of the journey.

Second: Have you ever been to Niagara Falls? That would be an interesting stop before getting home. It is a bit out of the way, but the mileage is only about 550 and 8.75 hours. If you are all carrying appropriate ID you could even go through Detroit to the Canadian side.

And its only about 400 miles on to New Haven.

Other than that, it looks like you will have to pick a spot in Pennsylvania and cross your fingers, unless someone out there has a recommendation they can contribute quickly.

Good luck, and enjoy your ride.

I was looking at that, that is a really great idea!
Yeah, I've done the 10-12 hours days, it's is not a fun way to go...

    Thanks so much Craig!
