  1. Default Las Vegas to San Francisco

Hi - I'm considering a trip in late September/early October.
I will be planning a route from Vegas to San Fran.
If I didn't want to take any longer than 2-4 days, are there
    any recommended stops?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Default Lots of scenic options...

Hello bday123, and welcome to the Great American RoadTrip forum!

You actually have several options, depending upon what you'd like to see...

It's a doable drive in one longish day from Las Vegas to San Francisco, so adding in a couple of days gives you some time to do some sightseeing. The most popular places are Death Valley, Yosemite, Big Sur, and other Coastal California destinations. You can swing as far south as San Diego, or as far north as Lake Tahoe in 4 days.

The routes you can take, and the stops you can make, depend upon what you're interested in seeing. But basically, the routes are:

Southern -- Las Vegas to San Diego (1 day), San Diego to Mid coast California (1 day), then to either Monterey via Big Sur, or on into San Francisco.

Middle -- Las Vegas through Death Valley to approx Bakersfield. Bakersfield to Yosemite. Yosemite to Monterey (spend the night) or direct to SF

Middle North -- Las Vegas through Death Valley to approx Lone Pine (or Mammoth Lakes or similar). Over tioga pass to Yosemite. Then to SF

North -- Las Vegas through Death Valley to approx Lone Pine. Lone Pine to Reno/ Tahoe. Reno through Sacramento to Napa Valley. Napa Valley to SF.

You could even head SE to the Grand Canyon (about 1/2 to 2/3rds day drive away), and spend a day there, before heading to SF on a longish 1 day drive.

Default And... if you haven't already been handed enough options, there are several other more "backroad" ways across the Sierra such as 108 to Sonora, 89/104 to Angels Camp, 89/88 to Jackson/Sutter Creek and 50 through South Lake Tahoe to Sacramento.

One aspect that might suggest 89/104 or 89/88 is the fall color (primarily Aspens) in late September. They can be gorgeous.

    Whew, so many choices!
