    Default Car Rental City Strategies

Hello, I am planning on doing a Christmas holiday road trip along the following loop:

LAX - SAN - TUS (Tuscon) - ELP (El Paso) - ABQ (Albuquerque) - SAF (Santa Fe) - LAS - LAX

I will be flying into one of the above-noted cities and departing the same one. It does not matter which one, the road trip will simply follow this loop.

My question is, assuming similar cost for flights, which airport do you believe would be best to rent a vehicle (i.e. good low price, less hassles/admin. fees, good vehicle selection).

I am a member of Hertz #1 Club Gold. I usually rent from Hertz and get a small corporate discount, but I am not necessarily partial to them.

I would also consider flying into small LAX-area airports if people believe it would be worth it (i.e. Ontario, Long Beach, Carlsbad, Orange County, Palm Springs, Burbank).

Thanks in advance for any assistance or insight.

    Adam

    Default Easiest: Las Vegas (LAS)

Sounds like a reasonable plan -- Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! Of all the airports, the easiest ones to pick up rental cars would probably be Las Vegas -- there is a new rental car terminal here and it is pretty slick. There is a 44% surcharge here, so if saving money is the primary goal, I think I would go with Albuquerque. On the other hand, if you want the best vehicle selection I would suggest either LAX or LAS.
