Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! By the fastest route, one can usually make it to the South Rim (national park) in about nine hours (using I-15 to I-40 to AZ-64).

There are lots of options -- here is one such field report -- although nine hours of driving is usually the limit for most travelers!

Here is an excellent post that describes some of the options.

Best way? Hard to say -- you could follow some of Route 66 (like discussed above) or go back on US-93 over the incomparable Hoover Dam or even go around the Grand Canyon and go back to Las Vegas via Zion NP.

U.S. Highway 15 to the 40 is our favorite route from LA to The Grand Canyon.

You can google the hotels/motels in the area, we prefer the South Rim.
Some have indoor pools. It was 95 deg F yesterday.

All the eating places near the rim are dear, so beware. Even McDonalds is $$.

If you like classic Hotels a few have great views of the Canyon. Their's the Brite Angel and the El Tovar.
Both located on the Canyon rim.
Absolutely, positively consider at least walking through the El Tovar Hotel.
Built entirely out of materials located within the Nat Park.
Nice cocktail lounge inside and a teriffic staff. Better than they have to be.

Ramada and a few other chains are located just outside the entrance Ranger station.

Some people drive to Las Vegas, and then take the Grey Line Tour bus that includes (box'd) meals to the Canyon too. A 1 day out and back run from LV.

Grand Canyon Caverns are located a reasonable drive from the South rim as well.

Also, if you happen to like old steam trains, consider perhaps taking the train from Williams Ariz. right to the Grand Canyon South rim.
