  1. Default seattle to vegas to la to seattle

Any suggestions for an 18 day trip, from seattle to vegas for 3 nights then to Long Beach for a week and a half maybe two, then thru San fran and a drive thru big sur and carmel then home to seattle. It would be my son and I and he wants to hit disney one day and magic mountain another. All advice from seasoned travelers and worthy stops for food, affordable but clean lodging would greatly be appreciated. This I hope will be a father son road trip he will always remember since he's now 13. I know I will always remember it. Thanks for all your help and wisdom

    Default Math

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

Either I am misunderstanding your plans, or you have a math problem here.

If you spend a week and a half to two weeks in the LA area and another 3 days in Las Vegas, you've pretty much used up all of your 18 days without having any time left over for your drive!

My advice, make the drive as much a part of the fun as your destinations. For example, I'd recommend heading down I-84 to Salt Lake City, and then stopping at some of Utah's national parks as you head into Vegas, and stopping at places like Crater Lake as you head back to Seattle.

    Default Fun Stops

Michael is absolutely right. You need to find at least one "destination" level stop, something he can look forward to, each day or he'll get bored real fast.

    Here are some good stops:

Baker City, Oregon: Oregon Trail Interpretive Center east of town

Salt Lake City, UT: Heritage Village at This Is the Place Heritage Park

Heber City, UT: Heber Valley Steam Train

Cedar City, UT: Bryce and Zion National Parks

Las Vegas area: Valley of Fire State Park petroglyphs

    Barstow, CA: Calico "ghost town"

    Lompoc, CA: Purisima Mission

    San Simeon, CA: Hearst Castle

    Monterey, CA: Monterey Bay Aquarium

Santa Cruz, CA: Boardwalk beachside amusement park

    Pidgeon Point, CA: Lighthouse

    San Francisco, CA: Alcatraz

San Francisco, CA: Seal Rock Inn (good, inexpensive place to stay)

Benbow, CA: Benbow Inn (special place to stay)

Garberville, CA: Avenue of the Giants

    Eureka, CA: Blue Ox millworks

    Crater Lake, OR

    Bend, OR: High Desert Museum

    Mt. St. Helens

Mt. Ranier Area: Northwest Trek wild animal park

A little research will probably turn up lots more. But let him be involved in choosing what to see each day.

Finally, both of you take lots of pictures and keep a dialy diary/journal. When you get home have him do a photo album or PDF document with his favorites of all your photos combined with his journal entries. You do the same. Neither of you will ever forget the trip, but if details get a little fuzzy later on, you can always open the album and remember. We did exactly this with our two kids 14 years ago and it worked like a charm.

Have fun, and make each day an adventure,
