Default LA to Seattle in 7-8 days

    Hi y'all

I'm an expat living in New Zealand and really looking forward to my first trip home to CA since I moved out of the country. My husband and I are planning on driving from LA to Seattle over July 30-Aug 7th. Can you recommend some itineraries? We'd like to spend two days in San Fran if possible, but other than that have no 'must sees'. I'd like to have a leisurely time and pick some specific neat things to see rather than trying to pack in too much. I wish we had more time to do the drive, but it's just not possible!

    Thank you
    Kirsti

Thanks for the links, Mark, that gives me a great place to start.

If I have specific questions about routes and places to stop once I get down to the nitty gritty of planning, is it appropriate to come back with specific questions? I'd rather try and have some sort of plan before we start out so we don't end up regretting the whole trip!

    Default Of course!

We love it when people do some initial planning and then come back for specifics. We can help you tweak your route then, point out highlights along your route, etc. Be sure and let us know just what kinds of things you're looking for, the types of activities you like to do, what your interests are, so we can target our advise as individually for you as possible. Enjoy the planning, that's half the fun!

7-8 days is more that enough time. I drove from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 5-6 hours 2 days ago on the 5 freeway, I did the coastal route (1 hwy - 101hwy) back down to LA and it took 9 hours. Have fun on your trip!

    Default Map advice

We're going to order some maps to start with the specific planning. I had a look at the maps recommended on the site - would y'all recommend the Benchmark or Delorme maps if we have to choose one type? Ideally I want something that will keep us from getting lost (of course!) but it'd be nice if it had sites/attractions on it as well as I've never been north of San Francisco, so I'm not sure what's up there, sites wise. Which brand do you think is better?

bmwg84, I'm impressed you were able to make it to San Fran in 6 hours! I'd like to think it's because traffic has improved since I'm moved, but somehow I doubt it!
