  1. Default San Francisco to Las Vegas - how to use up 2 extra days!

    Hi,

I am one of a party of 4, we will be travelling in September and I've drafted an intinerary as follows:

    4 nights San Francisco
2 nights in Monterey (including 17 mile coast road)
    3 nights Yosemite National Park
1 night somewhere in or outside Death Valley
    1 night Las Vegas
    2 nights Grand Canyon
3 nights Las Vegas before returing to UK.

We have 2 nights extra to fit into this itinerary. Any suggestions for extra places to go to or should we tag the days on to places we have already planned to visit?

Would really be grateful for any advice. This is a fantastic site.

    Jean

Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! Sounds like a really fun trip -- Here is where you might add a day or two:
1 night somewhere in or outside Death Valley
Waking up in Death Valley can be a surreal experience and two nights here would be cool.
    2 nights Grand Canyon
You could add an extra day and see Monument Valley at Dusk and stay over at Kayenta -- there are some amazing places to wander in the Navajo nation as well.
Another place would Oatman (route 66) and maybe stay overnight near the London Bridge?

  3. Default PCH/ Big Sur option

One option that would add a night would to be come down from Monterey/ Carmel area via PCH (Coast 1 -- Pacific Coast Highway) through Big Sur. That gives you the option of this scenic drive, before heading east at about San Simeon/ Paso Robles or even Santa Maria to head back east to Yosemite across California's Central Valley. You can visit Hearst Castle and take the tour (about 2 hours),

the elephant seal colony near Pedros Blancas (about 10 miles north of Hearst Castle), or possibly some of the wineries near Paso Robles.

It's about a half day from San Simeon to Yosemite Village -- figure a 5-6 hour drive without pushing it hard -- or less if you stay in San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles.

Many thanks for the suggestions - we will certainly look at these options. I so love this site.
