  1. Default Chicago to New Orleans....

    Hello all.....
Im embarking on a roadtrip from Chicago to New Orleans to help rebuild some houses in the ninth ward that were hit very hard by hurricane katrina and need some roadtrip advice/suggestions.

I know its about a 12-15 hr drive and was wondering if there were any places i should stop and see along the way? Any restaurants that would be worth a stop? I like off the beaten path places or even the tourist traps - never traveled this route before so any suggestions would be awesome....

    Thanx

That is a very noble reason for embarking on a road trip -- Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! -- I think you must have looked at an online planner for that time interval? Chicago to New Orleans by the fastest possible route is 930 miles and only a professional two-person driving team with the support of the local state police could cover that distance in 12 hours. Far more realistic would be a minimum of 17 hours (two full days of nearly nine hours each). If you add in some time for side trips to see fun attractions -- you will need most of an additional day. If you have a three day window for making this drive, we would be happy to make some suggestions. How much time do you have? No matter what, you ought to read this post about solo roadtrippping and this article about speed runs!

    Default Days, Not Hours

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

And thank you for contributing to the recovery of one of America's great cities.

I do get a little concerned when I see drives of this magnitude described in terms of hours rather than days, because I'm never sure if the traveller is aware of how much time and energy is involved. On-line mapping routines such as MapQuest and Google Maps have their place, but their time estimates usually bear little relation to the real world. Your trip will be over 900 miles and that is two days worth of driving, NOT 12 hours.

With that said, you are going to be basically driving down the Mississippi, with the option at any given point to be using either I-55 (for speed) or the Great River Road for some of the quieter, off the beaten path places. My favorite spots along the river are St. Louis and Ste. Genevieve in Missouri, Memphis, Tennessee, and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Here's a report on one trip down the lower Mississippi.

  4. Default Time Frames and Such.....

I have driven from chicago to virginia so im aware of solo driving and time frames...... and i agree that google and mapquest are not very accurate for time frames.....

I am leaving saturday mid-morning and stopping when i get tired to spend the night and rest up (which should be about after 8/9 hours of driving based on my previously mentioned trip)....... so it will definetely be a 2 day drive to get down there :)

Im looking forward to the drive - just wanted some interesting/cool suggestions for scenery or places to eat

    thanx for all your help

Louisiana, Missouri is full of some incredible murals, here are a couple of them: The Delta Queen and a railroad view. St. Louis could be on your way, and if you have never been up the arch -- it is certainly worth it -- another cool place to stay and/or drink is the Shack-up Inn in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

  6. Default Routing?

Do you have any suggestions for any good internet sites for routing out this trip?

Default We have several recommendations for that!

First, I would suggest reading this post, I made yesterday that provides a number of suggestions about using online trip planning programs.
