Default How is this for a Route 66 plan?

My wife and I are driving 66 in August and are trying to put together a flexible route. We've never been to the States before so we're really excited by the side trips to the Grand Canyon and Vegas. We're also looking forward to a few days in LA and a short run up to San Francisco.

We'd appreciate some feedback on our schedule for the trip (the places in red are where we'll be booking accomodation in advance, everything else is flexible)

We want to make sure that it's a good plan and doesn't rush certain areas or over stay at others...

    Day 1: Chicago airport
    Day 2: Central Chicago

    Day 3: Springfield, Illinois
    Day 4: Lebanon, Missouri
    Day 5: Tulsa, Olklahoma
    Day 6: Oklahoma City
    Day 7: Amerillo, Texas
    Day 8: Blue Swallow, Tucumcari
Day 9: Santa Fe/Alberquerque, New Mexico
    Day 10: Wigwam Motel, Arizona
    Day 11: Flagstaff, Arizona
    Day 12: Grand Canyon
    Day 13: Las Vegas
    Day 14: Las Vegas
    Day 15: LA
    Day 16: LA
    Day 17: LA

    Day 18: Santa Barbara/Pismo Beach
    Day 19: Santa Cruz
    Day 20: San Fran
    Day 21: San Fran

Day 22: Fly back from San Fran

    Default Route 66 run

Sounds like a fun trip, but you are going to find that many portions
of Old Highway 66 no longer exist, are closed, or are so rough you
will not want to drive on them. There are always alternate routes to
get you on toward your destination though, so don't become discouraged
as much of it is still intact, and more is being rededicated every year.

You may also find some areas are slow going because of slow speed
limits through towns, and many businesses that once were thriving on
66 are closed and or falling down.

At any rate, good luck and enjoy, you can always change some plans
as necessary while on the road.

Happy travels and following winds... :-)

Excellent philosophy for following the old Route 66 highway -- Flexibility! Like BlazingSaddles0745 mentions above, it can be very challenging to stay on Route 66, because it is not a continous highway anymore. Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! A road colleague of ours, has put together one of the best Route 66 virtual road trip sites and it can be very helpful for pre-planning purposes.

Las Vegas is a very fun city -- for a nice side trip -- check out Hoover Dam and Grapevine Canyon.
We're also looking forward to a few days in LA and a short run up to San Francisco.
Here are a few threads about that.

Be sure to look at the bottom of this page and the other pages you look at for more ideas and here is the RTA Route 66 Resource Page.
