Thread: May road trip

  1. Default May road trip

Hi, I'm new here and from Australia. I'm heading to USA in May and had planned to drive from Las Vegas via Death Valley and Bishop to Yosemite from May 20. But I hear it will be tough getting to Yosemite because of snow at that time of year. Is this correct? If the trip is possible at that time, will I need a four-wheel-drive vehicle? Are there any alternative routes? Thanks.

Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! 4-WD won't do you any good, SR-120 over Tioga Pass will probably still be closed to all vehicular traffic. To reach Yosemite from Death Valley, your primary choices are to either go around the southern end of the Sierra Nevadas or find a pass that is open (US-50 and I-80) are just about guaranteed and I would think that Sonora Pass will be open by then too. Here is some information about the choices.
