  1. Default Summer'07 Roadtrip California

    Hey,
I am planning the detailed route for our roadtrip at the moment. Tha trip will take place from 17th June to 2nd July.
So far we planned to take this route:
Flagstaff, Vegas, via Deatch Valley to Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Morro Bay, Los Angeles, San Diego/TJ...

I tried to plan a route with google maps, I am satisfied with the route but the track from Vegas to Independence and then to Yosemite is far to much in the south. Is there any possibility to go via Death Valley during that time? Will the rest of the track be open?
    Thank you for your help!

Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum!

A route from Las Vegas to Yosemite can certainly go through Las Vegas or any one of about five other routes, but your route will still go through Independence. As a suggestion, look at the second post in this thread for links to six route suggestions. You can also look at the bottom of this page. Are you aware, that the park pictured in green to the left of route is not Death Valley? Death Valley NP is the area between your planned route and Las Vegas. That "other" green splotch is Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. And yes, there are two routes across the Sierras that you could use. One is CA-58 and the other is the Sherman Pass road. This thread addresses both of those options.

The planned route from Las Vegas to Independence is way out of your way. If you were to use NV-160 to Pahrump, through Death Valley you could reach Indpendence much faster and enjoy some of the finest and most surreal desert landscapes in the world.

Okay I changed the Route to THIS.
I heard Death Valley might be closed in summer. Do you know if it is possible to cross DV during our peroid of the Roadtrip?

Default Death Valley only closes when it rains!

Summertime is one of the busiest periods. It is hot -- day time temps will be 116 to 120 degrees when you are there....

Thousands of travelers will be doing it then too. The park has never been closed. Sections have been made unavailable to motorized travel due to flash floods and other weather mishaps -- but the park NEVER closes.

Okay, thank you we will take the temperatur into account ;-)

Another question, do you know any cheap, but good possibility to stay at Yosemity. All the possibilities inside of the park are rather expensive and sleeping 25miles out of the park does not sound very nice...

Default Yosemite Bug would be my choice

Yosemite Bug is probably further than 25 miles (I can't really remember) but it is darn nice and a great alternative to traditional lodging choices.

Alright, I will check that one out.

Do you know any good Motel/Hostel/Hotel around Independence, CA?

I have never stopped over-night -- I usually stay in Bishop -- better selection of restaurants, grocery stores and motels. Plus it has some great bars and local hangouts.

    Default Winnedumah Hotel, Independence, Ca

I've never stayed at the Winnedumah Hotel in Independence,
but have driven by it several times. Every time I drive by,
I think, to myself, I must stay there one of these days.

It's a historical hotel, so I'm not exactly sure what to
expect. I've stayed at a few historical hotels and had
    varying experiences.

Here are some reviews on Trip Advisor.

    Here's a description from Fodors.com.

As Mark mentioned, Bishop will have more choices of lodging. It's a larger town.

Nonetheless, next time I'm in the area, I think I'll give
    the Winnedumah a try.

Here's an article from VIA Magazine about Hwy 395.
