Default Mavericks is getting ready to rock

The annual big wave contest at Mavericks (near Half Moon Bay, CA) is still coming. This year, Ask.com has built a site with good driving directions and info about the event.

    Directions and Parking Suggestions

A good read -- two safety jet ski riders who may have skied up a 100 foot wave on Nov. 21, 2001

Three very cool photos from past years!

Mavericks Web Cam and a bunch of other technical info -- Interesting even if you are not a surfer!

If you go this year, please post a field report!

    Default The Season is over!

The official Big Wave Riding Season at the famous Mavericks Break near Half Moon Bay has been "called" effective today. (It never happened). Big waves failed to materialize this year and Contest Organizer Jeff Clark has declared the season done. For more information, click here.

    Until next year.....

Default 2007-2008 Mavericks Season is getting Big

Here is a link to a the best slideshows of this year's waves and the silly, (but very hardy), folks who attempt to ride them.

  4. Default it been relatively big here..

OC, from HB to Newport Beach has been pretty big this week. Sets of 10-15' . Heck, even Bolsa Chica was running over 15'. Only problem has been there's been a good longshore current, so folks have been getting dragged down along the beach between sets. You don't see sufers needing to get towed into the waves in HB very often... but they were doing it earlier this week. Newport has reportedly had the best waves -- with the Wedge getting 20+' on some sets -- since the current has been low there. Oceanside, Trestles and other west facing beaches were also reporting 10-15' surf, with occassional sets up over 20'.

Default A 20-footer at the Wedge!

Yeah, I bet. The biggest I ever (body) surfed at the Wedge as about 12 foot and I was really battered on one memorable three-set combo. I can't even imagine getting flushed by 20+ footer there! That makes my back ache just to think about it. Trestles was also at 20? Wow, pretty powerful storm.

    Thanks for the report.
