  1. Default Know of any good daytrips from Portland?

We are trying to come up with a Spring Break vacation from Portland. (Technically we are temp residents from AZ here) We have three kids ages 8, 5 and 2. The coast is out of the question because we don't want to deal with high school/college kids and the traffic. Seattle is the first thing that came to mind. Thought about Boise but now husband is saying he doesn't want to drive for more than 4 hours if need be. Any other suggestions?

Seattle is a good day-trip location from Portland, so is any location in the Puget Sound for that matter (including the North Sound area), although you may be pushing the 4 hour limit.

There are some items that are much closer to Portland that have good potential too, such as Mount Rainier, Mt. St. Hellens, Mt. Hood, and the Oregon Cascades. You may also enjoy visiting Olympic National Park or Crater Lake for outdoor recreation. If you're looking for some place with a more of a city feel, then Seattle or Tacoma might be a good option, but again, these can be about 4 hours away.

If you have the option of staying in a low-cost motel or camping overnight, I would recommend going on a Weekend Northwest Tour, going up through Seattle to Washington State Highway 20 over the north cascades and staying the night in North Central Washington, then returning back down US 97, crossing at any of the mountain passes if you choose, or looping down to the Columbia River Gorge.

The area you are in is abound with good sights to see, and even back-country roads tend to make excellent scenic drives. Wherever you choose, you'll find you'll see something good.
