Default One day around Las Vegas

I am looking for some interesting things to see and do around Las Vegas in one day (maybe a day and a half.)

We will be there at the end of April for a wedding. So we are pretty booked up on activities for most of our visit. But I plan to rent a car for a day or a day and a half. I want to visit the Hoover Dam. But the rest of the time is open to other fun and unique sights to explore.

    Any suggestions? Thank you!

Walk the strip! Its a long way from end to end but I think it's worth it. Go into as many casinos as you can, just don't get sucked into the endless rows of glittering slot machines! The casinos down towards the airport are the nicer ones IMHO.

    Default Outside than the City

If you're going to be renting a car and are looking for things other than the Night Life (24 hrs a day!), then by all means try either Valley of Fire State Park east of the city, Red Rock Canyon west of it, or both. But both may be a stretch to do along with Hoover Dam in a day and a half.

Default looking to get out of the city

Thank you for the recommendations so far. We will be in Vegas for a week. And I will be spending plenty of time on the strip and in the casinos. I'm not much for gambling or staying in doors all day, so I think I will get bored of that part pretty quickly. I'm the only one in the group who has never been there before so I have a feeling that I will be following my friends to the places that they like the best. But I still welcome any advice of what to see or what to avoid while I'm there.

But my main reason for posting here is to find the things to do that are out of the city. After a stressful week of a wedding and the 24/7 go-go-go of the city I'll need to stretch my legs and see something new before heading home.

Default Grapevine Canyon & Chloride City

Las Vegas is the home of RoadTrip America in North America and we produce a website about what we find interesting about this boomtown. Megan writes virtually all of the articles and here are the newest ones.

In addition to Red Rock and Valley of Fire, (mentioned above) l like to stroll the grounds of Spring Mountain State Park, (located near Red Rock) or take a short walk up Grapevine Canyon.

This is pretty typical of what you can see within a 5-7 minute walk from the parking lot

If your vehicle can handle a rough wash crossing, the Roy Purcell murals were recently renovated in Chloride. Hoover Dam is always impressive and especially now with the bridge construction underway.

If your time for wandering doesn't allow the trip down to Grapevine Canyon, i would suggest the loop trip down US-95 and then turn east on NV-165 to the town of Nelson. Keep on going and drive through the historic Eldorado Canyon (millions of dollars of gold ore were mined here). The Eldorado Canyon Store still sponsors gold mine tours -- or you can drive down to the viewpoint. Very pretty drive. On your way back up the hill turn left on the main road in Nelson (it is a gravel road but well maintained) and follow it up over the pass and down to the US-95 for the return trip to Las Vegas. Lots of historic mining relics on the way.

The other direction -- to the SW Kelso has a very nice visitor center for the Mojave Preserve and the dunes can be quite fun to walk around

Finally, I really like the semi-loop road through the Sheep Mountains. Again you would start on US-95 but this time go north and leave the highway on Mormon Well Road, (a couple miles past the Las Vegas Paiute Reservation) and then follow Mormon Well Road through Peek-a-boo Canyon up to US-93 for the trip back to the city.

If you have some off-road/rough gravel road experience -- you can easily travel to the Racetrack Playa and see the MYSTERIOUS SLIDING STONES and still get back in one day.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Default Free Stuff

Ok first I've got to guess that your screen name refers to being an Aggie. While not an Aggie myself, I know plenty. (And way too many Aggie jokes.)

I've only been to Vegas once. But, I did manage to get a list of free shows from the Hotel (we stayed at the Excalibur). We started walking around at 8:00 and didn't get back to the hotel until 10:00 that night. I think we managed to go into most of the Casinos on the strip. I don't suggest trying to complete the entire list since I almost wound up going to the doctor's the next day because my feet hurt so bad. Luckily for me it was a driving day and I magically healed between Las Vegas and San Francisco.:)

    ---- Yes I am. :) WHOOP!

---- What kind of free shows? And could I get this kind of information from a hotel even though I am not staying at any of them? (We are staying in a house that has been rented for the week.)

    Default The Shows

We saw trapeze artists at the Tropicana, the fountains at the Bellagio, an indoor rainfall at the Aladdin, the lions at MGM and many other random things.

We just went to the front desk at the Excalibur when we were there and they had a stack of them on the edge. Maybe there's something put out by the Las Vegas tourism Bureau. I'm not sure, but our esteemed Editor lives in Vegas, so maybe he can help me out on this one.

There are both free shows and low-cost shows (usually afternoon shows) that are real bargains here. In addtion to the the ones Laura mentioned, you ought to see if "Fat Elvis" will be appearing at the Barbary Coast. It is a great show. I also really like Mac King and Ronn Lucas

There are several 1/2 price ticket booths on the strip -- one is at the MMM World and you can often get tickets for events and shows at great prices. One of the things you ought to do is to go the various casinos and sign up for the Player Club cards. They all offer free tickets when you sign up and so, for instance, you can get free Mac King tickets when you sign up for the Harrah's Club.

The other best bet is to look at this site, Anthony Curtis does a masterful job of keeping abreast of all of the free and otherwise low-cost offers that are always available in this city that never sleeps. Plus, we have some ideas for free entertainment on "our" Las Vegas page.

    Happy Planning!
