  1. Default SF to Grand Canyon with Kids

We are taking a week in April to drive roundtrip from San Francisco to the Grand Canyon with three kids ages 3, 6, and 8. I have lots of good info about the Canyon experience itself, but would LOVE suggestions for stops on the way there and the way back. Nature, culture, history--anything at all that might work for young kids! Ideas for things to do in and around the Canyon are also appreciated. Thanks again.

    Default There are a Few

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America forum.

Well, here are four relatively equally spaced possibilities that I'm sure my grandchildren (about the same ages as your brood) would like. Kern National Wildlife Refuge for a chance to get some exercise in a natural setting and look for some non-urban animals; Edwards Air Force Base where some of America's latest planes fly, the Space Shuttle occasionally lands, and home to those with the "Right Stuff"; the 'ghost town' of Calico; and another great natural setting, the Mojave National Preserve.

As for things near the Grand Canyon, here's a post with a few possibilities.

  3. Default What else would you like to see or do?

A week is plenty of time to get from SF to the Grand Canyon and back. As a rough estimate it's about 2 days drive to the Grand Canyon, and about 2 days back. Depending upon how long and what you have planned at the GC, there are a number of things you can do.

So.. the suggestions you get will depend upon some more of what you'd like to see or do I think. How much time margin do you have, and what do you think your family would like to do?

To get to the Grand Canyon you have a couple of options. There's a northern route that goes through Sacramento to Reno/ Tahoe and then south on the east side of the Sierras to Las Vegas and then to the Grand Canyon. That'll probably be at least 2 nights/ 3 days before you get to the Grand Canyon -- but takes you through Donner Pass, past Lake Tahoe, potentially through the silver mining area of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, and then south potentially through Death Valley, to Las Vegas, then over Hoover Dam. To return you can take the faster 1 night/ 2 day route around the south end of the Sierra Nevadas, through Barstow and Bakersfield.

If you don't do the northern route, you can spend a night in Yosemite on the way going or coming (it's about a half day drive from SF to Yosemite), but it will probably be 2 nights/ 3 days before you get to the Grand Canyon with that stop.

Another option is do the faster 2 days/ 1 night route to the GC from SF, but then pick up something like the Big Sur, or Disneyland or more things in San Franciso for a day or two.
