    Default Hitchhiking

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America forum.

Let me answer your questions in reverse order.

Yes, I used to hitchhike quite a bit a number of years back. It was safe right up to the time it wasn't. What I mean by that is that all the rides I got or gave went fine until the last one. I won't go into details, but suffice it to say that I chose to depart a (slowly) moving car rather than stay with the guy who picked me up.

Yes, it would seem that hitchhiking is more dangerous now than in years past. I'd suggest that you read this article, and I will note that many, if not most, colleges (once the bastion of both hitchhikers and rides) now actively preach against it.

My advice is: Don't. At best it is playing Russian Roulette. But that said, I will note that Mark, our fearless Editor, has a different perspective on the issue.
