Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! Have you posted before under a different username? This trip sounds vaguely familiar, but I know that your username is brand new today.
    Here's our trip thus far:
Looks like a very reasonable span of time to cover this distance -- Something that 100% of the regulars on this Forum wish we had time to do.
NYC to Red Bank, NJ (Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash)
    What is this secret stash?
Mt. Rushmore to Badlands Nat'l Park
Be sure to read this field report.
French Gulch to Redwood Nat'l Park
    And this one
San Francisco to Las Vegas, NV
    More ideas here.
El Paso to Carlsbad Caverns, NM
I would push a little farther north and check out Santa Fe and Taos
Very no-rush trip. Very few deadlines. Lots of money.
    How many people?

Nope. I've been following for a while for ideas, but never posted. Thanks for the links.

The Secret Stash is a Kevin Smith fan's paradise. We'll be hitting the original store.

Thanks for the links and suggestions. The "pigtail" bridges in South Dakota sound like a hoot. I hadn't thought about the Mojave Nat'l Park. What are some attractions in Santa Fe and Taos?

I also vaguely remember something about a Nat'l Park where you can explore the rim of a volcano... or am I just making this up?

There are going to be three of us travelling together this summer.

Well, thanks for jumping in and posting then!

Cool, I was unaware of this place.

Great bars, restaurants and lots of local history. There are some great links in this post. Personally I really like the area up by Angels Fire -- some of the backwoods jeep trails are great and there is a peaceful quality of this place.

Let's see there is the Meteor Crater in Arizona, the cinder cone preserve in California and the Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley -- but I am not remembering a specific rim of a volcano. I do know a few places where you can walk through lava tubes -- including some huge ones in Idaho and a very scary one near Lake Mead in Nevada,
There are going to be three of us travelling together this summer.
Make sure you all take the QUIZ and make sure you are all expecting the same kind of trip!

    Enjoy!

Just off Route 66 near Amboy, California is the Amboy Crater -- I started to walk to the top when I there last, but the 112 degrees sorta of zapped my energy.... But I did get photos of the Amboy Shoe Tree.

    Default Mallrat

Schaumburg to Twin Cities, MN (Mall of America)
Since you are a Kevin Smith fan, if you are going to head to a Twin Cities mall, you should head to the Eden Prairie Mall, in the Minneapolis Suburbs. While it isn't as famous as the Mall of America, it is the mall where the movie "Mallrats" was filmed.

There's another one too.. Lassen Volcanic National Park (north of Sacramento). You can either hike to the top of Mt Lassen, which blew like Mt St Helens back in 1915 (its a day hike -- from a couple to several hours long), or you can go to Cinder Cone, which is a 700' high volcanic cone on the North-East side of the park (also a day hike, but I've stayed at the campground nearby). Lassen is a very nice National Park, and is not very well known and usually pretty empty.

Here's a picture of one of the 1915 eruptions.. http://www.shastahome.com/lassen-vol...ges/terry3.jpg

Or.. Sunset Crater National Monument (north of Flagstaff, east of Grand Canyon). Big Lava Flows, and another volcanic crater you can hike up to. There's some lava caves (and an ice cave) nearby, but I haven't been to them.

    Default Yellowstone!

    Larrison,

I must have been experiencing a mind-lock yesterday, of course, Lassen should have jumped to mind. It is very cool to see steam pouring out of a snow bank up in the park in winter at Lassen. Actually anyone who has ever visited Yellowstone could claim they have visited an near active volcano -- the entire park fits inside a huge caldera...

Wow that photo of the eruption at Lassen -- scary -- not a good place to be!
