  1. Default north to alaska

Am planning on spending the summer in Alaska. Will be traveling from Texas to Anchorage with Chev 2500HD Diesel and 30' 5er.
What is he earliest I should plan on touring through Canada visiting Banf and Jasper area and then joining the Alaskan Hiway.
Would appreciate comments rearding the Alaskan Hiway from recent travelers.

    Default Welcome!

Welcome to the RoadTrip America forum!

This is kind of the "Holy Grail" trip since it is out of the way for most of us. Here is a thread with some information that may be of help to you. There is also some info here, though the original poster felt it necessary to remove some info.

Perhaps some of our Northwestern friends will have more info for you.

Hey, this sounds like an incredible trip. At the start of the Alaskan hi-way is a town called Dawson's Creek. It's a Quaint little town, but growing quite rapidly. If you plan on stopping there, a cousin of mine has a hotel there called the George Dawson Inn. PM me if you'd like details.

    Good luck on the trip!

I have driven and camped in this area in February. I can tell you that a stop at Fairmont Hot Springs is really, really pleasant when traveling with a RV!

Feb.,hmmmm. I'm wondering about the scenic roads in early May. Some say go some say no. I'm going but wonder what to expect for a 'normal' Spring. We'll check out Fairmont Springs for sure. Thanks.

UR correct -- I nearly froze on this trip. Roads were icy -- not all that much fun. What is true is that spring in Alaska has been both earlier and much, much warmer than "normal" of late. This is a dual-edge sword -- the road are muddier longer with the advent of the early thaws. The general rule is that you should not head north sooner than the end of May --
