    Default Possible Trip Out West

I know its still a while off but im starting to plan a trip for me and three maybe four friends to take out west in July-early August of 2008. We live in Ohio not that far from Cincinnati. We plan on driving from here to Chicago and then taking Route 66 all the way out to California. Then on the way back we want to drive up the West Coast and come back across the nothern states. We want to stay some nights at motels and others camping in state parks. Does $2000 for each of us sound like enough money to make the trip with or would we need more? Does spending about 4 to 5 weeks on the road sound appropriate for this trip? (We want to take our time and do a lot of sightseeing along the way) Also, other than the problems we will have renting motels are there any restrictions for traveling minors? (only one of us will be 18 and only for the second half of the trip)

    Default Minor Issues

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

First, I think you should start by reading our Teenage Roadtrip Article and take the Roadtrip Compatability Quiz.

Those two things should start giving you a little perspective as you start to plan this trip.

Your budget sounds pretty feasable, but you'll have to keep an eye on your money. As long as you are keeping your costs down, by doing things like camping as you are planning, you should be ok.

There are some issues with traveling as minors. Motels in particular can be hessitant to rent to those under 18, especially when there is a group of minors. Some places won't care, but you could run into some places that will turn you away. Camping is a good way to get around this, as I've never yet run into a campground that cared about the ages of its visitors.

    Default ...and More

Renting a motel room is only one of the more minor issues that will come up. For a couple of others, check this thread.

    Default Route 66

It's great to see people your age interested in a non-interstate trip. The trip there is also an important part of any vacation.
