  1. Default Michigan to New York (Suggestions Needed)

    Hello everybody,

Really great forum, helpful people, vast amount of information.

I'm from Europe and fairly new in the US. I plan to drive (not rental) from Ann Arbor, Michigan to New York next month with my brother who will come to visit me. We plan to stay in a hostel for 4 days and return to Michigan.

I have a couple of concerns. I see that it's about 620 miles. I guessing it should be something like a 10 hour drive. I plan to make only one stop for food and catnap. (no sightseeing). Is this a fair estimation?

The other, more important, thing that concerns me is the parking problem. The place where we'll stay don't have parking space. I've been to Manhattan a few years ago for a week (by plane) so I know that we won't need the car during our stay at all. But I don't know where I can find a cheap/free parking space for the car during that 4 days. (if there's any such thing in or around New York!) It does not have to be in Manhattan, which I'm sure would be next to impossible, so could be somewhere in NJ or a close location etc. I don't know what to do with the car.

    I'd really appreciate your suggestions/comments.

    Thanks again.

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

I'd say your travel time estimate is just a little low. I'd say around 11 hours will be more likely when you factor in east coast traffic and your stops for gas and food.

As far as parking goes, I think you'll have a hard time finding something that is cheap for that many days. I've found on street parking near commuter rail stations into New York that is cheap, but I was only parked there for the day. Overnight parking on city streets can be illegal in some places (and unsafe in others), so you'd have to do some searching.

Hopefully others closer to NYC will have more ideas.

East Coast (and "North Coast" - Ohio) traffic being what it is, why don't we call it an even 12 hours drive time.

I've not heard of anything in Manhattan that combines the words "affordable" and "parking" in the same sentence. I would look into places in New Jersey for the car, as you have stated. I really doubt you'll be able to find a free spot, though.
